🏛️ A Place of Faith, Peace, and Sacred History
Namyang Shrine is a revered Catholic pilgrimage site in South Korea, dedicated to honoring the noble faith of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for their belief during the Byeong-in Persecution (1866–1873).
Historical records, including the Record of Byeong-in Martyrs, document the arrest of faithful believers in the Namyang region. Among them, four martyrs—Philip Jeong, the couple Philip Kim and Maria Park, and Thomas Kim Hong-seo—remained steadfast in their faith until the end, gloriously accepting martyrdom at this site alongside many unnamed martyrs.
Rediscovered through archaeological excavation in 1983, the site underwent extensive restoration and was officially proclaimed as "Our Lady of the Rosary Shrine" on October 7, 1991.
🏛️ Historical Significance
• Place of Martyrdom: Originally, this site was holy ground where numerous anonymous Catholic believers were captured and executed during the Byeongin Persecution of 1866 under the Joseon Dynasty.
• Prayer for Peace: From its establishment, the shrine has served as a sanctuary dedicated to ongoing prayers for world peace and the peaceful reconciliation and unification of the Korean Peninsula.
🏛️ Key Architectural & Visual Highlights
• The Cathedral (Designed by Mario Botta): The imposing brick cathedral was designed by the world-renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta. It features two striking 40-meter-high towers that function as spectacular skylights to illuminate the interior with natural light.
• The 20-Decade Rosary Trail: The shrine is surrounded by beautiful rolling hills laced with a scenic trail embedded with large stone rosary beads. Pilgrims walk along this forest path while reflecting and touching each stone to pray.
• Statue of the Merciful Jesus: Standing at 4 meters tall, this monument welcomes visitors at the Hill of Divine Mercy and carries an official apostolic blessing from Pope Benedict XVI.
